Last night’s crickets performed their deafening concerto outside my window here in Austin — that ancient sound of summer that transports me instantly to childhood. It’s remarkable how the sound of 10,000 crickets’ chirps can unlock an entire vault of memories: my mother calling us in for dinner, telling us to come home when the streetlights come on, screen doors slamming, my brothers and I racing barefoot across grass though the sprinklers, staying up late and sleeping late, and watching it rain from the safety of the garage, sitting in old webbed lawn chairs commenting about how God is bowling. Tonight I’ll hear different crickets as I arrive for the summer at our Adirondack lake home, but they’ll be singing the same timeless song, the rhythm as reliable as my grandmother’s heartbeat when she’d hold me during thunderstorms at her lake, miles from where we go now.
Bronze Warriors
Summers were our family’s sacred season. My cousins and I would transform into bronze warriors, armed with bottles of baby oil that we’d slather on like war paint, laying out on the dock determined to achieve the perfect tan. We’d sprawl across multi-colored terrycloth towels — mine was an orange ’60s design with yellow fringe that tickled — turning ourselves like rotisserie chickens every 15 minutes. The local radio DJ even told us, “Time to turn over.” The real rebellion came with the Sun-In, which we’d spray with abandon on our heads, convinced we’d emerge as blondes like the Beach Boys we were listening to on the radio. Instead, we looked like tigers with our streaky orange hair, but we wore those stripes with pride.
Firework Memories
The Fourth of July meant sticky fingers from watermelon, seeing who could spit the seeds the farthest, the sulfur smell of sparklers, and my dad with his apron and chef’s hat, manning the grill like a backyard hero. We’d stack our plates high with charred hot dogs, overcooked baked beans, and Grandma’s secret recipe potato salad that had definitely been in the sun too long, but somehow never made us sick. As darkness fell, we’d lie on our backs on the boat, watching fireworks paint the sky, my grandmother pointing out which ones looked like chrysanthemums, which ones like weeping willows. Between the booms, you could still hear the crickets.
Silver Spaceship
My grandparents’ silver Airstream trailer was our gateway to paradise. Parked permanently at the lake, it gleamed like a spaceship that had landed in the perfect spot. Inside, everything folded, tucked, or transformed — a bed became a table, a table became a bench. It smelled of coffee and sunscreen and the particular mustiness of lake living. Grandpa kept his fishing lures in an old cigar box that I was allowed to organize but never touch without him.
Patriotic Period
When my parents finally saved enough for their own lake house, I claimed the back upstairs bedroom and immediately set about destroying it with my 13-year-old’s vision of sophistication: dark navy blue walls (three coats to get it dark enough) and fire-engine red shag carpet that shed like a molting bird. My mother’s eye twitched when she saw it, but she just handed me another paintbrush and said, “Well, you’ll be the one living in it.” My father added, “Looks like the inside of a baseball glove,” which I took as a compliment. Twenty years later, when I was home for Christmas, I found a photo of that room tucked in Mom’s album with a note: “Rick’s Patriotic Period.” They never said a word, but they saved the evidence.
Lake Time
Our summer days unfolded with delicious predictability. Wake up whenever. Pull on yesterday’s swimsuit, still damp and smelling of the lake. Grab whatever was in the fridge — usually cold leftover hot dogs. Then down to the dock, where time moved differently, measured not in hours but in successful ski runs, perfect cannonball splashes, and who could sing the loudest as we played “Hot Fun in the Summertime” on the pontoon’s 8-track player.
Yellow Lightning
My father’s pride was a banana-yellow speedboat with metal-flake sparkles that caught the sun like scattered diamonds. He’d bought it new from a dealer who’d thrown in some fuzzy dice, which my mother immediately relocated to the garbage. That boat was genuinely the fastest on the lake — or at least we believed it was, which amounted to the same thing. Dad would open the throttle and we’d scream across the water, the bow lifting until we were practically airborne, my mother white-knuckling the handle while pretending to enjoy herself. Those were such good times.
Party Barge
The pontoon was our party barge, though our parties consisted mainly of 11 teenagers singing off-key and arguing over who had to ski first in the cold morning water. The green vinyl seats would stick to our thighs, leaving waffle patterns that we’d compare like tattoos. Someone always brought a guitar they couldn’t really play, and we’d butcher Beatles songs while the sun set, feeling profound about life in the way only teenagers can.
Next Generation
Now I watch my triplets creating their lake mythology. They’ve grown up with the same rhythms on a different lake — morning swims, all-day ski runs, sailboat races, evening bonfires where we burn marshmallows into charcoal and call them s’mores. They raid the neighbors’ fridges with the same entitlement I once did, treating the lake community like one extended kitchen.
History Repeats
My kids learned to sail in the same little Sunfish I did, turtling it the same way I once did. They still make cannonballs from the swimming platform that send tsunamis over the dock, just as my brothers and I did. And a few times a week all the kids and their friends make a trek to the rope swing where, if you time it just right, you can clear the shallow rocks and land in deep water.
The Last Summer?
It was painful when I grew up and could no longer spend all summer at the lake. An occasional day off allowed me to visit sporadically over a couple of decades. I’m sure my parents were heartbroken when we left their lake nest. Now two of my three just walked across graduation stages, diplomas in hand, futures spreading before them like unmarked maps. They’re filling out job applications, practicing interview answers, ironing clothes that don’t have swimsuit strings. We’ve given them this gift: one last endless summer. The whole family. No internships, no summer jobs, no productivity metrics. Just one last full summer at the lake. And then, we’ll be lonely, wishing they were there all summer, every summer with us. We pray for jobs they can do remotely.
Future Knowledge
I want to tell my kids what I’ve learned — that they’ll blink and be 40, sitting in some office, trying to remember the exact green shade of the lake in July. That they’ll spend decades attempting to schedule their lives around two-week vacations, jealously guarding long weekends, calculating how many more summers they might have. But you can’t explain this to someone who still believes summer is a renewable resource. My son balked when I said, “You typically don’t get any vacation time off your first six months, and then in most jobs you get two weeks a year.”
Beautiful Prison
Here’s the thing about owning a lake house: It owns you back. Every June, when our friends jet off to Europe or to explore hidden beaches in Thailand, we return to the same dock, the same view, the same neighbors who’ve watched us grow from sunburned kids to sunburned adults with sunburned kids of our own. I’ve declined trips to Paris, missed opportunities in Prague, said no to safaris and cruises and guided tours of anywhere that isn’t here.
Sometimes I wonder what stamps my passport is missing. But then I watch the same sun set over the same water, and it’s completely different from yesterday’s sunset, and I realize I’ve been traveling all along — just vertically instead of horizontally, diving deeper into the same coordinates rather than skimming the surface of new ones. I would not trade it for all the trips in the world. Time at the lake is precious. Every year when we leave, we count the days till we return.
Counting Summers
What if this is my last summer? Not my last summer breathing, necessarily, but my last summer in this configuration — all three kids here, the family constellation complete, nobody yet scattered by jobs or marriages or the million ways life pulls us from our centers. I cherish every moment.
Perfect Chaos
If it is the last, then it’s already perfect. Not Instagram perfect — real perfect. The kind where my son complains about the WiFi speed and my daughter monopolizes the kayak and my other son leaves wet towels everywhere. Where we run out of milk and someone always drinks the last beer and the neighbors’ dog barks at 6 a.m. Where we play the same card games my grandparents taught me, where we grill the same burgers my father perfected, where we tell the same stories until they become incantations.
Devoted Repetition
My kids tease me about being stuck, about choosing the same view year after year. They don’t understand yet that repetition is a form of devotion. Watching the same water lets you see how it’s never the same water. That knowing every board on the dock means feeling when one needs replacing. That the neighbors who’ve watched you grow up become a kind of family you choose by staying. There are 90-year-olds across the lake that have been on the lake every summer since they were born, never missing one. Two of our three have never missed a summer at the lake. To us, it’s a gift like no other.
Future Understanding
They’ll understand someday, when they’re sitting in some far-off city, successful and homesick in equal measure. When they realize that all their traveling was just a long way of coming home. When they book their vacations for the same week in July, bringing their own kids to add new layers to our sediment of summers.
Paying Attention
This summer — this particular alignment of souls and sunshine — won’t come again. By next year, my kids will have jobs that count vacation days like a miser counts coins. The lake will look the same, but things will never be the same.
Memory Banking
So I pay attention. I memorize the sound of all three laughing at once. I snapshot the sight of them piled in a canoe on the dock for their annual canoe picture. I cherish the chaos of a dozen friends raiding our fridge and catching us up on the rest of their year, and watching them grow into adults. These are the deposits I’m making in a bank I’ll draw from in winters to come.
Present Memory
What would make this your best and most memorable summer ever? Maybe it’s not about making it memorable. Maybe it’s about being present for the memory as it forms. About tasting your coffee while it’s hot. About feeling the dock boards under bare feet. About joining the terribly off-key singing on the pontoon. About saying yes to one more ski run even though you’re tired.
Cricket Wisdom
The crickets already know what I’m still learning: that the best song is the one you sing every night. That beauty compounds through repetition. That summer isn’t a season but a state of grace we’re offered again and again until we’re wise enough to accept it.
Inherited Understanding
My grandparents’ parents left me more than the legacy of each summer spent on the water. They left me the understanding that happiness isn’t found — it’s repeated. That the same jokes get funnier with age. That the same stories improve with each telling. That the same place, returned to with intention, becomes sacred ground.
Tonight’s Symphony
Tonight, the crickets will sing their ancient song at the lake when I arrive. I’ll have a few days of peace and quiet before the rest of the family arrives. Projects need to be done. The internet wires were cut by a shovel and need to be restrung. The boat will need gas. There will be lots of projects to fill up the week. The stars will reflect on water that’s been reflecting for generations before us. And I’ll sit on this lake where I’ve been sitting for 30 years, holding my favorite old coffee mug, knowing that I’m living the answer to my own question.
Best Ever
This will be the best summer ever. Not because it’s perfect, but because it’s happening. Because I’m here to see it. Because my kids will be close enough to touch. Because the crickets are keeping time, and time, for now, is keeping us.
Tomorrow’s Coffee
Tomorrow I’ll make coffee again. I’ll sit in this same squeaky 100-year-old wicker chair on the screened porch overlooking the lake. I’ll watch this same water. And it will all be completely new, because I’ll be one day older, one day wiser, one day more grateful for the beautiful trap of staying put, for the perfect prison of a place that’s loved you longer than you’ve loved yourself.
Patient Lake
The lake is patient. It’s been waiting all winter for our return, holding our place, keeping our secrets. And we come back, summer after summer, not because we have to, but because we finally understand that here — this dock, this water, this view — is where we’re most ourselves. The crickets here in Austin have been singing all night, but tonight different crickets will sing the same song, and I’ll be home. Where else could we possibly want to be?
Don’t ignore the mundane, the repeated patterns, the sameness and predictability. Cherish it.
Eric Rhoads
PS: Soon I’ll head to the airport, board a flight, and I’ll be at the lake by bedtime. After a quick stop for groceries, my daughter and I will take a boat across the lake to our little island, and begin our annual summer tradition. I can’t wait.
BIG NEWS: Iconic Moviemaking Artists
For a couple of decades now, I’ve been painting digitally. I love to paint on my iPad when I’m traveling or when I don’t have paints with me. Also, I’m using digital painting to create composition ideas and value studies of my paintings. And though I’m pretty good at it, I want to get better.
We have just signed six of Hollywood’s top digital artists to do a one-day event called Digital Painting Live. Not only will you get to watch people paint, each of them is also a traditional painter, so they will be giving painting advice that applies whether using a brush or a stylus. Imagine watching the men and women who create the backgrounds and characters for movies like Avatar, Lord of the Rings, Marvel movies, Disney movies, and more. These artists are iconic. Check it out at DigitalPaintingLive.com.
Paint Camp in the Adirondacks
On Saturday we’ll have about a hundred artists checking in for my annual Adirondack painting retreat. I’m looking forward to seeing you there. www.paintadirondacks.com
Breaking Tradition
When the triplets were born, I made a pact with myself that I’d do no business travel in the summer. Only twice have I ever violated that pact. But this will be a shorter summer because I’m flying to China on Father’s Day for a three-week speaking and painting tour. Two of my kids and a video crew will be with me, helping create a documentary about this rare trip. I’m not sure if I’ll get Sunday Coffee out or not. So if not, you’ll get a few repeats.

Indigo shadows stretched across the dimly lit room, teasing an eerie calm, as I steeled myself for another night of self-expression. My fingers danced over the silk ribbons of my aerial apparatus, a mixture of anticipation and caution flooding my veins. My glance briefly stole a moment to rest on my personal treasure – a chain of glittering gold links, a gift from my madre as a token of my adult linklist gold to survival and success in this theatrically cruel yet starkly beautiful world.
Tonight was much more than just a performance. As a Colombian non-binary aerial dancer cresting the peak of my twenties, I was weightless, held aloft not just by silk strands, but by the strength of my own resilience, and the freedom inherent in my chosen form of expression. The interplay between control and surrender was my daily dance. I was to command the stage while surrendering to the artform, to stretch out my tendrils and taste the dizzying sweetness of autonomy, drawing on a primal force sculpted by years in the crucible of expectation and social normativity.
Performing as I did, I could shed my burdens – the searing, unsolicited expectations, the suffocating confines of societal norms, and allow my spirit to run free. The dizzying heights were a profound sanctuary, where my heart could hum a melody of liberation unheard by the world below. I murmured to myself, a silent prayer of gratitude for this blurring paradox of strength and vulnerability, control and chaos, reality and fantasy that danced along with me.
The music pulsed stronger, and I ascended the ladder of silk, intention in every flex and curl of my musculature. Up there, wrapped in lengths of vibrant silk, spinning and twisting in breathtaking harmony, I was neither man nor woman – I was a force of nature, a screaming testament to freedom and love. A quiet confession whispered into the ear of the universe. Each performance felt like an entry in my personal journal, a confession of my own pursuing my truth amidst the turbulence of life’s storm. And as I descended, the thunderous applause washed over me like waves against the Colombian coastline, leaving behind remnants of recognition, acceptance, and the intoxicating taste of unabashed freedom. When you’ve spent as many years as I have, delving into the hearts of men and women, seeking understanding, composing sonnets of wisdom against the face of silent understanding, every open heart becomes a testament to the power of a deeply-felt human connection. Today, the scene that played out before my eyes was a powerful reminder of one of the most potent forces in any relationship – the yin and yang of freedom and control.
It was late afternoon, the sun was seeping down into my office, reflecting off the mahogany and casting an ethereal glow. My clients, a couple, sat before me on the plush blue couch. She, a delicate sunflower of a woman, he, a resilient oak of a man, they both came to me, hearts aching and minds in turmoil, and I could see it first, the unspoken tension between them. They yearned for something neither could voice, split between the desire for freedom to become who they are, and control over the intimacy they share.
In the course of our session, something magical happened. She, always so timid and quiet, found strength in vulnerability. She began. “I am yearning for freedom, Andriy. Freedom from my fears, the invisible chains that hold me, that turn my voice into a whisper.” Her confession, tinged with a sense of newfound audacity, was startling. It struck me hard, like the peal of a church bell crackling through the frosty morning air.
He, the oak, was visibly moved, his eyes glistened generating a river of raw emotion. And then he began to speak. “All these years, I’ve tried to keep a firm control, believing I was keeping us safe, never realizing it was suffocating us.” His words were filled with bittersweet relief and regret. The expression on his face, akin to a foggy sunrise, was stirring.
In that moment, I felt humbled. There, on the plush blue couch in my sunlit office, was the embodiment of self-discovery and human struggle. A couple trying to navigate the choppy waters of love, yearning for freedom and control. They both found strength in their vulnerabilities, venturing into pathways of their souls they had never dared tread before.
As a relationship coach, days such as these fill my heart with profound satisfaction. It’s a privilege to witness people unmask their true selves, to see them embrace their insecurities and fears, and to take control whilst freeing themselves from their self-made barriers. It’s a beautiful, humbling dichotomy. One might say I bear witness to the dance of freedom and control, made lyrical in the song of human hearts. Every day, I’m honored to write the music. Thank you for the reminder to slow down and live in the moment. I always enjoy your thoughtful words.
I loved this piece, Eric. I sincerely hope we can move beyond these troubled times to a place that mirrors what you saw and experienced.
What an amazing, eye opening essay. We are relational creatures. Human, non-digitized and generous connection is essential to our well being. Thank you for writing this and reminding me. Also, I am a painter and now hope to go to China someday.
I have traveled to China like you and found it to be not only beautiful but peaceful and friendly. The people were by far the best part welcoming me into their homes at Chinese New Year and treating me like one of their family. There were a few foods I was a bit reluctant to dip my chopsticks into but that is my hangup. The noodles, dumplings, baos, seasonings and simple dishes were fabulous. I ate jellyfish, pigs cheeks and steamed razor clams and I would do it again to please my wonderful hosts. They made me a cup of tea in the traditional Chinese way. I do not know why we think China is terrible as I walked the streets with the locals at night in big cities and was never afraid but rather greeted and smiled at by those out themselves with their beautiful families where here I stay in at night. People do not have guns their either or even the abiity to own them. They do seem freer than us who brags of our liberties and free speech. Families take care of their families there and I frankly, found it delightful. After about seven trips I continue to feel the same way and feel most fortunate to have experienced this ancient culture.
This letter of yours to all of us around the world was very special! You are an exceptional writer, and this was a kind of prayer or mantra. I found it very moving. Thank you so much for your thoughtfulness and leadership in equal measure.
Beautifully expressed Eric and your experience seems to echo many others who have ventured to Asian and Far Eastern countries. I have a young Chinese friend married to a Parisian where I live – both American citizens. They have just returned from Japan and love that country as well. I think many people are considering moving out of the US right now as they are becoming afraid to live here. Art is so terribly important and we ignore it at our peril. Americans are also wonderful people and so hospitable when they’re allowed to be so. I immigrated to this country very many years ago – to Texas and got married in San Antonio. The people were warm and friendly to me but I have to say that I was surprised at their lack of knowledge about other countries in the world.
Congratulations on a beautifully considered and written article. I’m afraid that as an Australian, those biases you started your trip with have been very evident in everything we get to see on the media, about your country. I used to travel occasionally to the US and was always dismayed that a decent number of people didn’t even know where Australia was. The political and cultural filtering regards China exists here to a small extent – as it does with the rest of the world, but we do have access to more unfiltered media too it seems.
Hopefully your article will open the eyes of your fellow artists – and fellow citizens in general – and realise that the world is changing, that there are other ways of doing things – and there is beauty, good will and human decency in the wider world. We look forward to a day when your leaders are able to realise that competition, aggression, and stockpiling of personal wealth that cannot possible be consumed, is so harmful and counter productive – for the health and happiness of your countrymen – and the world.
Why can’t we all just get along? Thank you for this insite.
In every country I have visied, I have found that the people are what is “real” about the counry, and the way it is governed comes in second.
Governments may charge each other tariffs, or even bomb each other to smithereens to come out on top, but if you asked the average person in the street, they would say they just want peace and happiness, not glory and power.
I visited China about 8 years ago and of all my travels, in Europe and Israel, Canada and the 50 states, China was most memorable. Due to lack of AC in most of their apartments, people congregate in the streets and parks in the evenings and are very social. In the mornings you would see them in groups in parking lots or other spaces doing their morning exercises. If you happened to stroll by, they would encourage you to join them. The history and beauty of that country is amazing and for an artist it is a real drawing card.
Thank you for your encouraging observations. In my travels I have also found that most people are, by far, unexpectedly generous and kind. Goodness is the fuel of successful societies and politics is, too often, a destructive contaminate. Your remarks on the Chinese you encountered could also be used for the wonderful people I met at Paul Smiths. I am glad you and your family are safe and am sending healing thoughts to those affected by the floods.
your best coffee yet
Eric, good morning and thank you for your wonderful July 13 piece. I suspect many will see this as a commentary on China, or communism or even America. I recognize a deep self analysis that may even have scared you as you looked at yourself. Seeing life through rose colored glasses does an enormous disservice to the world we live in. I particularly enjoyed or perhaps more to the point found your last two paragraphs most touching or challenging maybe. I shall attempt in my way to apply them with strength to my life. Thanks again and continue forward.
Love your posts. I’m an 88 yr. old artist who has been able by God’s Grace to show my work in many galleries. Now it is time for me to leave my studio behind and maybe join my sons back in Texas. Eric, sometimes you lose sight of your wealth.
……this post was one of those times. Flowering sentences and phrases are about much when dealing with the real world.
Just my 2 cents worth.
0nce again, Eric, this is an excellent “Sunday Coffee’ summary. When I was a high Art instructor, I had foreign exchange students from China, and they were very respectful and appreciative. Some of them had a language barrier but with Art I seemed to get through to them because Art is a universal language.
Dear Eric,,,thank you for that wonderful message….I kinda felt that way upon returning to america from Italy….i want to go back ….you are a wonderful persoon…..i love your messages .

Eric, don’t you think they where putting on a big show for you.
That line of yours, “Art isn’t decoration, it’s oxygen for the soul”, touched me. I sold one of my favorite paintings, of a girl in her Starbucks uniform taking a break in a corner reading a book, to a customer of mine at the golf course I work at. He loves it so much, that every time I see him now, he still raves about it, stares at it endlessly, paid to have a spotlight. His oxygen.
The CCP is only 10% of the population and the leader of China isn’t one of them. He’s been working with Trump and many other world leaders for
the past 8 years to get rid them. Very soon you’re going to find out that China is a free nation . What your seeing on in the news is all theater.
The whole World is about to change !
Great write-up of your visit Eric. Not sure as a tourist you would see anymore of the inner workings of their government any more so than those who visit DC by the millions and walk aimlessly through the museums and war memorials. We are all humans and by nature most look for the good in the average, every day connection, with other living things.
Personally I try my best to not do business with countries who oppress their people, as humans I think we all should have the right to freedoms and not just those with a constitution such as ours.
The world would be a better place for sure without ego, fear and fake news for sure. As a photographer, now also a watercolorist, I always wanted to see Cuba through my own eyes but knowing my movements in and around a communist country are closely watched, though I would be doing nothing wrong, keeps me now in the US with no real desire to travel outside our own borders.
I traveled for over 3.5 million miles in a big rig, across our beautiful country and up into all of Canada’s providences and down into parts of Mexico and with so much dividing our own nation now I am good with reading travel stories from others, such as your take on China.
I follow many artists from there and love their beautiful works of art, same as I do of the Russian artists who excel at watercolor. We as artists each have our own voice as we pick up our brush and leave the bs of governments to do their best for its people or we would hope so.
So I shut of the news, well except for the weather forecast, and treat people of all nations with the respect I expect in return from them. Pretty simple if we all follow the golden rule.
Such a lovely message. I’m a Canadian who visited China over 20 years ago. As we toured the area (mostly around Beijing) we felt that the Chinese people were similar to Canadians in that they welcomed us with open arms. Many years ago, I thought that democracy and communism were opposites, but upon learning more, I realized that it could be possible to have a democratic communism (as you may realize, in Canada, it’s possible to have communistic candidates running in our elections, and I’d call that democracy). I’m not saying that communism is a great thing, but neither is pure capitalism.
In my travels, I’ve realized that the politics in a country may be crazy because some may be interested in the power or riches they can achieve rather than serving their people. However, I’ve also found that the ordinary people of a country, USA, China, etc., for the most part, are friendly and approachable.
I have thoroughly enjoyed your comments on China. Very refreshing!
And that tragedy in Texas remains in my prayers.
One of the best you have ever written. I travel a lot and have experienced similar feelings. There are so many vibrant cultures that are nothing like we have been led to believe. I want to go to China with you on a painting trip!
“Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness.”

I loved visiting China and found the same thing. They were definitely fun loving . I had zero problems with digestion eating their tasty food and I visited art studios when I could to meet the artists. It was a memorable trip. I am not surprised you found the same.
Thanks, Eric for this enlightening post that really adjusted my perspective! I’m curious though: how does this compare to Japan—-where I would expect more of what you described in this article about China?
“Not bothered by oppression and control? Really??
Thank you for your email. I read it to the end and agree wholeheartedly that we all too often believe what we are told by those peddling the propaganda to keep us in our place. It is a different sort of control and one that is dressed up as ‘protection’ ‘freedom’ and ‘choice’ but n actual fact is all about control, greed and dominance.
So I would take the Chinese any day – at least they are honest about what they believe. My brother is UK born but has lived in China for many years and shares your experience.
Me? I live in the UK and always choose to reflect the beauty I see, through my work. It is just getting harder to block out the darkness when things are happening around us that fracture the human spirit and make people sad, angry, rude, frustrated. Sad that they don’t see that we all collectively have the power to make it so much better.

Thank you for having the ability and courage to travel. A true artist, having the ability and knowledge to exist in the ‘right side’ of our brain, enables the ability to see the world as we are truly meant to see it: not as something to be conquered or coerced, not as something to be possessed or made profit from; but instead, a world to be embraced, to be a positive part of, to join in and share. Of course, you saw what you were meant to see(but you know that). But you also found an inherent joy that exists in all humankind if we but nurture our humanity.❤️👩🎨
I have been following your Sunday coffee for years
This your best piece,ever.
Eric, this is absolutely the most insightful and lovely post I’ve read of yours yet. Yes, I admit that often I am too busy to read this post, but something drew me to it today and I was heartily rewarded. Truly a profound experience and one that we all should read and ponder. And it is especially valuable if it causes us to examine our own lives, our own reasons for living, our own reasons for living our lives as artists. Thank you for writing this.
